Sports: Luka Modric set to sign new contract at Real Madrid

Luka Modric is close to signing a new deal at Real Madrid, ending speculation over whether he’ll depart the Bernabeu this summer.

The Croatian penned a one-year extension with Real last year but a contract for next season hadn’t yet materialised despite weeks of negotiations between the player’s representatives and the club.

Gianluca Di Marzio reports that an agreement has now been reached after Modric weighed up his options, with a formal announcement set to follow in due course.

36-year-old Modric is one of the most decorated players of the last decade, winning the Champions League four times as well as two La Liga titles and a Copa del Rey with Real. He is closing on 450 appearances for the club and now looks likely to surpass that mark with his new contract.

Modric also won the coveted Ballon d’Or in 2018 after helping to guide unfancied Croatia to a maiden appearance in the World Cup final, and continues to operate at a supremely high level despite being in the twilight of his career.

He has flourished in Real’s midfield this season alongside Casemiro and Toni Kroos, showing off his extensive passing repertoire and supreme fitness levels, and barring a calamitous end to the season he’ll pick up a third La Liga title – after Carlo Ancelotti’s side streaked away from Sevilla, Real Betis and latterly Barcelona in the title race.

Manager Ancelotti has previously said that Modric will finish his career in the Spanish capital having joined from Tottenham a decade ago.
